One-day Art workshop: Painting Portraits in pop-art style

“Perpetual moderness is the measure of merit in every work of art.”
Painting Portraits in pop art style
Gulmohar Days invites participation in an exciting daylong hands’on workshop titled, “Painting Portraits in Pop Art style”.

Increasingly, pop art is being popularised through simple techniques to recreate photographs in the pop art style, the movement which acquired a cult status with artists like Andy Warhol.

The workshop will combine a lec-dem supported by clips of some of the great artists who popularized the movement along with hand’s on artmaking sessions.
Participants will each arrive at an artwork in the popart style rendered with acrylic paints on canvas.
Session 1:
An interactive lecdem on the works and inspiration of some landmark artists of the American Pop Art movement such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein etc.
Session 2:
Participants will be required to bring a portrait photograph in b&w or colour.
Pop Art reduces images to blocks of colour with little or no shading, so when looking for a photo to use it’s important to keep this in mind. Look for a photo with clearly definable shapes and tonal areas. Once the photo is changed to
black and white, it will become more apparent whether it is suitable.

Painting Techniques for Creating a Pop Art Portrait

Participants will refer to the photo printout to get the tone placement right and follow step-by-step painting techniques:
There should be no shading within the colours — the aim is for three vibrant blocks of colour (the finished painting should have the appearance of stencil art). Through a step-by-step process participants will create sketches and drawings before arriving at a final artwork rendered with acrylic paints on canvas boards.
Enjoying the Results
One of the advantages of painting in the Pop Art style is an impressive finished product. Although the image doesn’t look ‘realistic’, it still portrays a recognisable portrait and is easier to paint than skin tones. Once the techniques are mastered, it makes a great gift!
Duration: 6 1/2 hrs
The workshop is open to interested individuals irrespective of prior drawing/painting experience.
Materials (acrylic paints, paper, dry pastel, brushes and canvases) and briefing notes/backgrounders will be provided.
The workshop will be facilitated by Renu, a trained artist. Besides participating in several exhibitions in India and abroad, Renu has been conducting art workshops on visual arts and art and storytelling using an interactive and hand’s on learning approach over the last 4 years.
